"The second to last track is always the weakest" and the nine other rules of rock and roll - in a Word backstage podcast!

David Hepworth's picture

ImageRobert Forster of the Go-Betweens features in Word To The Wise in the latest issue of the magazine, talking about his book The 10 Rules of Rock and Roll, and we've made this available in our Backstage Podcasts series. This is an occasional series that has in the past featured the likes of David Simon, Clive James, Don Felder and many others. If you haven't already subscribed then you can do so here or at iTunes.

Because you may not have your podcast preferences sorted out as tidily as you might, it's not a bad idea to go your iTunes podcast page, hit unsubscribe from our podcasts and then re-subscribe. That way you may find them flowing more freely. While you're at it you could add some kind of testimonial. It's a while since any one has commented. A bell will ring in heaven if you do.

I'm sure it will be a great

I'm sure it will be a great listen when it arrives on iTunes (drums fingers, looks at watch, opens new tab to look at cats on YouTube ...)

On iTunes...

the 'Backstage' podcasts are listed seperately. Look for Word Backstage Podcast.

I noticed it on my ipod this morning

and I shall listen to it on my way home this evening. Thanks and good to see a backstage pod again - they have been rather good.

The lack of comments here has compelled me to add something

No great insights from me, just to say....

Thankyou gentlemen for a diverting and pleasant 30 minutes on my otherwise tedious train journey.

Those Rules Be ...

10. The three-piece band is the purest form of rock and roll expression.
9. Great bands don't have members making solo albums.
8. Every great artist hides behind his manager.
7. The guitarist who changes guitars on stage after every third number is showing you his guitar collection.
6. No band does anything new on stage after the first 20 minutes.
5. The band with the most tattoos has the worst songs.
4. Being a rock star is a 24-hour a day job.
3. Great bands tend to look alike.
2. The second to last song on every album is the weakest.
1. Never follow an artist who describes his or her work as dark.

Pretty much spot on, so far as these pub debates can be, don't cha think?

However, I have a quibble re. rule #9: what about Rod Stewart and the Faces?

re rule 9

I think the point is that once he started making those solo albums it was the end of the Faces so they became a great band no more.

RULES OF ROCK

HERE’S MINE...

10. If you are over 50 you will NEVER have time to play all your albums again.
9. Most of what you look back on as ‘great albums’, when you listen to them now, are pish.
8. Rock has seen all it’s finest moments.
7. Belle and Sebastian are the worst band that has EVER existed.
6. Bands that don’t have at least 50% girls in the audience are going nowhere.
5. Bob Dylan hasn’t really done anything great since Blood on the Tracks
4. Volume does not equal power
3. All the best music was recorded on 8-track machines or less
2. All great singles have great intros.
1. Anyone who says they don’t like The Beatles just don’t deserve to own ears

in reply,

10 - Mary Margaret O'Hara could. Oh you mean albums you've bought.
9 - Depends...
8 - maybe, but people thought that in 1962.
7 - Worse than nickleback?(who I refuse to honour with a capital letter)
6 - Grand point. Furthermore, bands ought to be encouraged to have at least one female member.
5 - Yes he has.
4 - No it doesn't
3 - Yes it was (most of it)
2 - Pulling Muscles from a Shell.
1 - You're absolutely correct.

The second to last track is

The second to last track is always the weakest? Do me a favour... off the top of my head, some wonderful penultimate tracks:

Sub-Culture (New Order - Low Life)
If I Needed Someone (The Beatles - Rubber Soul)
Mr. Apollo (The Bonzo's - Tadpoles)
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out (The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead)
Jump (Derek & Clive Live)
there most be loads of others....
